The Market Cardi Pattern
The true origin of this sweater is the short sleeve version I made in July of 2021. The inspiration of said sweater was an episode of Wizards of Waverly Place (or WOWP if you will), that at some point in the episode featured Alex helping someone at a fruit stand or market of some kind and this person she was helping was using a market bag to hold produce. And that was really my first memory of seeing such a bag. I don’t know when I remembered this scene and why I decided to make it into a sweater but I’m glad I did. Making the original was quite fun, pretty much making it up as I go. Now what really gave me grief were the fruit appliqués. When I had first come up with this idea I really wanted them to be under the mesh of the cardigan, to make it look like they were inside of a bag. However, my stitches just weren’t thin enough, and you couldn’t see the fruits through the sweater. Next I was like ok what if I make a completely different top and just connect the fruits with that yarn, as if they’re poking out of the bag. This really didn’t work. Then I’m like fine ok let’s just sew them on top that will still look great. Once that was decided I had to play around with placement. I thought I had done it, thought it was perfect. I pinned the fruit to the sweater and tried it on, you know just to be safe. Once it was on I realized unfortunately I can’t put any near the sleeve seam of the sweater, cause when I put my arms down they would be covered and you would’t be able to see them. I went back to rearrange. One last placement and it worked! You could see all the fruit appliqués and I actually had some I had to take off. Finally, the market cardigan was done!
Let’s make the cardigan!!

Skill Level
This is a fairly beginner friendly pattern. If you are confident in your double crochet and chain stitches, you’ll breeze through! If you aren’t 100% sure, there is also an accompanying video tutorial. The video tutorial is only for one size, but all of the techniques covered in the pattern are included in the video.
Techniques used in the pattern
Double crochet
Chain
Increase
Decrease
Single crochet
Treble crochet
Slip stitch
How it fits
This is an oversized top, meant to be boxy and loose. If you want a tighter fit, I’d suggest sizing down. Always check the final measurements to make sure they are what you are looking for in the fit of the sweater, compared to your own measurements.
Construction
We start at the bottom of the back panel and work our way up. Once we are done the back we go straight into the first front panel without fastening off. Once the first front panel is done we’ll reattach our yarn and do the second front panel. The sleeves are the made separately, attached to the sweater, and then sewn together. Once everything is done we’ll crochet along the exposed seams (along the front panels and the neck), which is where we’ll create the ties for the front. Lastly we’ll make the appliqués and attach wherever you wish!
Notes
The turning chain (which will be either ch 2 or ch 3 at the end of a row) does NOT count as a stitch
The pattern is written with AMERICAN terms
When it says TCM for the entire row, that means repeat the pattern for that stitch for the entire row as explained below. (This goes for any of the sts listed below).
The pattern for the body starts with including all sizes in the same set of instructions. After row 24 the pattern will split and each size will have its own section with its own set of instructions.
The sleeves are separated into three different sections of different sizes. They are grouped together just due to their specific stitch count multiples.
If there is no stitch count after a row of instructions, the stitch count has not changed.
Sometimes the stitch patterns (dcm, tcm, dc2m, tc2m) will not work out perfectly due to the stitch count. Where this is the case, the pattern will tell you to dc or tc a certain amount before or after the stitch pattern. Ex – Dc in the first st, dcm for the rest of the row. This means dc in the first stitch, then start the stitch pattern of dcm. So it will be dc, dc, ch 1 skip a st, dc etc. Notice the 2 dcs in a row at the beginning.
The chains in between stitches in the mesh patterns do count as a stitch.
Materials
Weight 4 acrylic yarn (you can probably use any material, but I use acrylic) Approximate yds needed for each size are shown as sizes are shown in brackets. You may need more yarn, you may need less yarn. Amount of yarn needed changes from yarn to yarn and person to person. 800 yds (900 yds, 990 yds, 1080 yds, 1170 yds)(1260 yds, 1350 yds, 1440 yds, 1530 yds)
Size 5.5mm crochet hook (sweater), 4.5 mm crochet hook (appliqués)
Stitches and Abbreviations (US TERMS)
Dc – Double crochet
Dcm – Double crochet mesh (see below)
Dc2m – Double crochet double mesh (see below)
Sc – single crochet
Sl st – slip stitch
Tc – treble crochet
Tcm – Treble crochet mesh (see below)
Tc2m – Treble crochet double mesh (see below)
2dc – double crochet increase (dc 2 in one st)
2tc – treble crochet increase (tc 2 in one st)
Stitches Mentioned Above – they’re easy!
I don’t exactly know the names of the stitches so I’ve made up new ones that I’ll be using throughout the pattern.
Dcm – Double Crochet Mesh
The double crochet mesh is simple – double crochet into the first stitch in the row, chain 1, skip over the next stitch (this stitch is the chain 1 we just did). Continue the pattern of dc 1, ch 1 skip a st until the end of the row. The end of the row will be a dc because we are working with an odd number. For all of the “mesh” stitches, the chain in between stitches counts as a stitch.
Tcm – Treble Crochet Mesh
The treble crochet mesh is the same as the double crochet mesh, just with a treble crochet instead of double.
Dc2m – Double Crochet Double Mesh
Say that ten times fast! But this one is very simple as well it just has a long name. The regular mesh mentioned above is a sequence of two stitches, and this one is a sequence of three stitches. Dc, ch 1 and skip a stitch, dc. The reason I’m calling it double mesh is because when you repeat the sequence, you get two double crochets/stitches beside one another.
Tc2m – Treble Crochet Double Mesh
Once again, this is the same as the Dc2m just with treble crochets instead of double crochets.
Gauge
There’s no exact gauge as we are using a bunch of different stitch types which all vary in width. The best thing to do to make sure your yarn/hook/tension combo matches mine is to crochet a square in DC using a 5.5mm hook. Remember when making your gauge swatch to make it bigger than the gauge listed as the ends of rows are not completely accurate. I’d suggest making your square about 20 sts and 12 rows, and measure within that to match the gauge below.
4” = 12 sts, appx 7.5 rows
Measurements and Sizing
As previously mentioned, this is designed with a slight oversized fit in mind, appx 8-10” of positive ease in the body based on bust measurement.
Size Guide
Pattern Structure
The way this sweater/pattern works I’ve had to split it up into different sections at some point. At the start, all sizes will be following the same instruction/section and within that, the bracket system of sizing — xs (s, m, l, xl) (2xl, 3xl, 4xl, 5xl). Wherever you size is here in the brackets, that is the number you need to follow in the pattern when all sizes are instructed at the same time. For example – if it says “Chain 59 (65, 71, 77, 83) (89, 95, 101, 107), for XS ch 59, S ch 65, M ch 71, L ch 77, XL ch 83, 2XL ch 89, 3XL ch 95, 4XL ch 101, 5XL ch 107. After row 24 the pattern will split into different sizes.
With that, let’s begin!
To start, chain 59 (65, 71, 77, 83) (89, 95, 101, 107)
Row 1: Starting in the third chain from the hook, dc into each ch until the end of the row. You will have 57 (63, 69, 75, 81) (87, 93, 99, 105) sts. Ch 3 and turn your work.
Row 2: Starting in the first st, tc into each st until the end of the row. Ch 2 and turn.
Rows 3-5: Dc into the first st, ch 1. This is the dcm (double crochet mesh). Skipping the next st, dc into the stitch after that (the 3rd st in the row). Ch 1 again. Repeat this pattern (dc 1, ch 1 and skip a st) until you have 1 st left (at this step the last st you did should be a chain). Dc into the last st. After rows 3 and 4 ch 2 and turn. Once you’e finished row 5, chain 3 and turn.
Row 6: Tc into each st for the entire row. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 7: Dc into the first st, ch 1 and skip a st, and dc in the next st. This entire row will be the dc2m stitch. That was our first 3 sts. Repeat the dc2m pattern for the entire row. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 8: Tc into the first st, ch 1 and skip a st, tc into the next st. This is the tc2m. Repeat this pattern for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 9: Dc into each st for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 10: Dcm for the entire row. Ch 3 and turn.
Rows 11-12: Tc in each st for the entire row. After row 11 ch 3 and turn. After row 12 ch 2 and turn.
Rows 13-15: Dcm for the entire row. After rows 13 and 14 ch 2 and turn. After row 15 ch 3 and turn.
Row 16: Tc in each st for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 17: Dc in each st for the entire row. Ch 3 turn.
Row 18: Tc in each st for the entire row. Ch 3 turn.
Row 19: Tcm for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 20: Dc2m for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 21: Dc in each st for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Row 22: Dc2m for the entire row. Ch 2 turn.
Rows 23-24: Dc in each st for the entire row. After row 23 ch 2 and turn, after row 24 ch 3 and turn.
Here is where the different sizes will split off for the rest of the back panel and the front panels. Click your size to jump to your specific instructions.

Front Ties
Before we assemble everything and attach the sleeves we’ll do the front ties as it’s easier to do without the sleeves attached. Fasten on at the inside bottom of one of the front panels. Sc around the inside edge of the front of your sweater. Once you reach the last increase on the first front panel, ch 52. Starting in the second chain from the hook, slip stitch into each ch until you reach the sweater. This will be 51 sl sts. I did my stitches into the back loop of the chain. Continue to sc around until you reach the last increase on the other front panel. Ch 52, turn, and sl st back again. Sc to the bottom of that front panel. Fasten off. There is no exact science to single crocheting along the inside of the sweater, you will just have to gauge how far apart the stitches should go, and make sure they are not too far apart and not too close together. Don’t be afraid to take out what you’ve done if it doesn’t seem right! This is demonstrated in the video.
Assembly
Step 1: Attaching the sleeves
Find the middle of the top of your sleeve. Using a stitch marker, pin the middle of the top of your sleeve to the middle of the treble crochet row making up the back neck shaping for the body of your sweater – the row with the decrease (tc2tog). That is the middle of your front and back panels. Lay your sweater out flat with your sleeve attached as shown in the image below, with the wrong side (what will be the inside of the sweater) facing up. Make sure the corners of your sleeves line up with the same rows on your front and back panel. Then sew the sleeve to the body using whip stitch, highlighted in yellow in the below image. Repeat with the other sleeve.
Step 2: sewing up sides and sleeves
Once your sleeves are attached, fold your sweater and sleeves in half as though it is complete as shown in the image above. Make sure what is currently on the outside, is the wrong side of your sweater. Starting at the bottom, sew up the side of the sweater, and then the seam of the sleeves, highlighted in yellow in the image. Repeat on the other side. Weave in ends.
Extra
If you want you can add fun appliqués as I have done! I did not write the patterns for these appliqués, so here they are linked to their original authors! To attach, sew your appliqués onto your sweater in any way you see fit. Make sure you are not sewing them too close to the underarm part of the sweater as when you put it in the appliqués will be covered.

Watermelon and grapefruit https://www.supergurumi.com/how-to-crochet-semicircles (Again cannot remember what I did as I made those two up as I went, but this is pretty much what I did – changing colours to match what you want to make. For the grapefruit I did surface crochet.)
Butterfly https://crazyhands.net/crochet-butterfly-for-beginners/
I followed the above pattern, but changed it slightly. Heres what I did:
I used a 4.5 mm hook. For the big wings, I only did 3 dtc instead of 4. For the antennae/body I just wrapped some yarn around and tied it at the top instead of chaining.
pin these!
